Understanding CBD

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive and naturally occurring substance found in hemp and cannabis plants. CBD has recently become an emerging hot topic since the legalization of medical marijuana. Now, more than ever, people are shifting their opinions and choosing CBD to provide natural relief for their well-being. Clinical studies have proved that CBD is a safe and non-addictive substance with many potential medical and therapeutic benefits for the body.
This year, the Food and Drug Administration approved Epidiolex, a CBD concentrate, for two rare and severe forms of epilepsy, on the basis of several clinical trials.

What is the difference between Hemp & Marijuana?

Hemp and marijuana plants are from the same genus – Cannabis. Hemp and marijuana look similar and smell similar. The difference comes when hemp and marijuana are compared with their THC and CBD percentage. One type of cannabis is high in THC and low in CBD. This type of cannabis is known as marijuana which causes a person to experience a psychoactive status when consumed. Another type that is high in CBD and low in THC is known as industrial hemp, and because of its low percentage of THC, it does not cause any psychoactive reaction.

What is the difference between CBD and THC?

Cannabis is known for its psychoactive effect when consumed. This is coming from the main active ingredient of cannabis called THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THC works similar to the cannabinoid chemical that is made naturally by the body. Cannabinoid receptors are concentrated in parts of the brain associated with thinking, memory, pleasure, coordination and time perception. THC attaches to these receptors, stimulates and affects memory, pleasure, thinking, concentration, sensory, and time perception. On the other hand, CBD (cannabidiol) which is another compound unique to marijuana, is non-psychoactive and blocks the psychoactive effect caused by THC. This is to say, CBD does not alter a person’s mind.

How does CBD work?

CBD (Cannabidiol) interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Endocannabinoid is a cluster of millions of cannabinoid receptors that are naturally produced from your body. Cannabinoid receptors are present in almost every organ of your body but are primarily closeted in the brain and central nervous system.

There are two main cannabinoid receptors: Cannabinoid 1 (CB1) and Cannabinoid 2 (CB2). CB 1 receptors are primarily found in the brain while CB2 are mostly found in the immune system. Unlike THC, CBD is known to not to interact directly with the two main cannabinoid receptors. This is how CBD is incapable of causing any psychoactive effect.
